Nock-ten
      #34019 - Tue Oct 19 2004 08:36 PM

Yet another typhoon in the west pacific...forecasted to reach near supertyphoon intensity. This one is not forecasted to recurve as opposed to the last system due to the regression of the mean ridge, but the keyword is mean and I feel that the ridge can still do a reverse eddy, and stick a nose out. It doesn't add up with the teleconnection pattern but maybe due to the presence of a stronger jet stream, everything is faster...Anywho, Japan has had one hell of a season, even worse then Florida's with at least 7 systems making landfall; just a grain of sand for them!

Typhoon Nock-Ten has leveled off at 105 knots and should soon begin a slow decline in intensity. Nock-Ten is still heading for northern Taiwan.

When is their season going to end? Does anyone have the stats for the season, different agencies call the typhoon different things?

Their season doesn't really ever "end," just changes with the calendar year. There is a distinct minimum in activity in the wintertime (albeit not in the exact middle of winter I don't believe; I think it's slightly askew of that), but storms happen all year around out there. They've actually been below normal in the WPC, IIRC, in the past few years with activity, but things certainly weren't below normal out there this year.

Snow in Tokyo? Everywhere seems to be getting snow at the moment. It's better than a typhoon, anyway. The only tropical cyclone anywhere on Earth at the moment is Tropical Storm Raymond which is just coming ashore in Australia.
