Has A GOM Storm Ever
      #46197 - Sun Jul 31 2005 03:38 PM

formed in the Gulf of Mexico, as a low surface pressure and gone on to develop into a storm(hurricane) that effected the surrounding coasts. Or, have the GOM storms always formed in the BOC or the lower atlantic etc. and then entered the GOM. Just wondering because of the proximity of the coastal areas to the primary Gulf.

Of course. Obscure example: I think Ailcia in the early 80's formed in the northern gulf and hit texas as a 100kt hurricane. Home 'grow' or 'brew' stuff, as it is so often called, can be very bad.

all the time. almost every year.
matthew last year, grace, henri and larry in 2003, bertha, fay, and hanna in 2002. i don't know the long term average, but i'd say 1/6 storms forms in the gulf outside of the BOC. note that many only reach t.s. status, but not always. anita in 1977 got to category 5, and formed only a couple hundred miles south of the louisiana coast.
