Bug Acitivity
      #65469 - Wed May 31 2006 04:37 PM

Funny you should mention strange insect activity in your area. I live in New Orleans. I like to run in the park after work and noticed after Hurricane Cindy last year the mosquitoes were unbelievably aggressive, as in continuously having to swat them off even while running. I've never experienced that in over 10yrs of early evening exercise. I figured it was because we lost a lot of trees or something. Anyway that kept up until we got hit with Katrina. I was away for a month but when I returned the mosquitoes were quiet again, and no problems again this year. Hope that means we are safe from another hit. I know it sounds weird but maybe something to think about.

Regarding insect activity, Saturday morning about 1:20am in fact, I heard the screaming cicadas. They are a cricket like creature that have a 100 year reproduction cycle. One that is created lies dormant for 100 years before hatching according to the story. They are very much like crickets only much louder and constant if they sing at all. In the weeks or so before the advent of Charlie 2004 I was leaving the workplace and the large oak trees at work were so loud that at first I thought it was electric lines picking up extra sound. We did not know that Polk County was going to be hit 3 times in 6 -8 weeks. The other night I heard the Cicadas again. Not as many but loud and bouncing around the trees in my neighborhood. The reason for fewer is that the oak trees were planted in the last 20 years. The oak trees at work had been there for up to 50 years, moss and all. I do wonder if there is a connection or all of this is just coincidence. Scientific observation is merely connecting the dots sometimes.
